SYNOPSIS

It’s difficult being an ogre. Because of your looks, you’ll be shunned by the world, made fun of, or even attacked by an angry mob. So then you go live in a swamp where nobody can bother you, and you can be ogre-ish in peace. But what happens when one day, out of the blue, a refugee caravan of fairytale creatures arrives with the news that they have been banished for being freaks by the one and only Lord Farquaad? Do ogres simply head out to try and regain their swamp and get the fairytale creatures back to their home? Anything is possible when you rescue an extremely talkative donkey from Lord Farquaad’s guards and Donkey becomes your sidekick. And we mean anything – from rescuing a captive princess to unlikely friendships, from staging a coup d’état and… well… falling in love. 

Shrek The Musical is a charming tale of friendship, bravery, and the unexpected forms of true love – as though it was plucked directly from the pages of a fairytale book! So come on out of your swamp, and experience a spectacular story with loads of heart!

CREATIVE TEAM

In 1990 William Steig published a children’s picture book Shrek!, the inspiration behind the 2001 Dreamworks Animation film Shrek. American playwright David Lindsay-Abaire adapted this story, along with elements from its cinematic sequels into a book that serves as the basis of the swamp-tacular musical. With his lyrics and Jeanine Tesori’s toe-tapping music, Shrek The Musical saw the light. 

The 2026 run of Shrek The Musical at the Beau Rivage Theatre will be headed up by a world-renowned creative team, including the talents of producer and director Jeb K. Rand (Grease, Elf: The Musical, Footloose, Cinderella On Ice, The Nutcracker) and Jennifer Rand of Rand Productions, alongside choreographer Dewayne Barrett.

HISTORY & LEGACY

Shrek The Musical first premiered in a trial-run at the 5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle in 2008, and after some changes were made to the production, it had its Broadway debut at the Broadway Theatre in December 2008. The cast included the talents of Brian D’Arcy James (Something Rotten!, Hamilton, Into The Woods, West Side Story) as Shrek, Sutton Foster (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Anything Goes, Grease, Little Women, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) as Princess Fiona, Christopher Sieber (Spamalot, The Prom, Company, Death Becomes Her) as Lord Farquaad, and Daniel Breaker (Hamilton, Hadestown, The Book of Mormon) as Donkey. The show ran until January 2010 on Broadway, with 441 performances. 

To date, Shrek The Musical has received a Tony Award, three Drama Desk Awards, a Laurence Olivier Award, and a Grammy Award nomination.
